In 2019 the G06 became the first BMW with an illuminated kidney grille — a detail that has since spread across the whole range, and one that turned a decorative panel into an electronic component with a control unit and a connector.
More hangs off that nose than the grille. Behind it sit the radar for adaptive cruise and autonomous braking; the cameras live in the mirrors and windscreen. Every one of those needs calibrating once fitted. Without it the systems run wrong, and you find that out on the road rather than on the ramp.
The G06 shares its headlights with the X5 G05 — same units, same coding. What it does not share is the tail: the X6's tailgate is one piece, the X5's is split in two. That difference accounts for most of the money lost in this family. A headlight off a G06 will equally fit an X5 G05.
