With the G23 in 2021 BMW reversed itself and went back to a fabric roof. Its predecessor the F33 had a three-piece folding metal top that was heavy, halved the boot and whose hydraulics became a running theme with age. Fabric saves around forty kilos, opens in about eighteen seconds at up to 50 km/h, and gives the load space back.
Which means nothing roof-related carries between the generations: different mechanism, different latching, different stowage, different sealing line. Settle the generation before ordering a roof part.
At the front the G23 is a G22 coupé, with the same tall grille, the same bonnet and the same wings and front doors. From the B-pillar back it is its own car. The M4 Convertible G83 builds on it with wider wings and aprons of its own.
An open car of this size gets driven carefully; what reaches us usually comes from front-end damage — aprons, headlights and air filter boxes.
