The F55 is the five-door MINI of the third generation — a contradiction in terms to purists and a success in the sales figures. Against the F56 three-door the wheelbase grew by a good seven centimetres, the length by about sixteen, and the boot from 211 to 278 litres.
Mechanically the two are identical: UKL platform, transverse three- and four-cylinder engines, built at Oxford. At the front the F55 is an F56 as well — nose, bonnet, wings and headlights are shared, so front-end damage can draw on either pool.
From the A-pillar back they separate completely. Doors, rear quarters and roofline are five-door specific, and thanks to the longer wheelbase not one door skin from the three-door will fit.
The 2018 facelift brought the Union Jack rear lights; before it they were conventionally drawn, and the two do not swap. Across every MINI of these years that is the commonest wrong purchase, because nothing else about the cars warns you. Doors and headlights are accordingly what we have most of for this model.
