The F15 is the third-generation X5, 2013 to 2018. It kept its predecessor's concept and refined it: more aluminium, more efficient engines, and for the first time a plug-in hybrid in the range (the xDrive40e).
The split tailgate is a feature of every X5 generation and the single most important point when buying used. A large upper section with the glass, and a separate lower section that drops down. Each has its own hinges, seals and latches — and the upper one usually a powered mechanism, which is among the most common failures. "X5 tailgate" is therefore not a specific description; there are two different parts.
Air suspension was fitted either at the rear only or on both axles depending on specification. Bags and compressor are classic wear points and a frequent reason these cars get broken. Switches, ignition barrels, front wings and aerials are what we take off this model most often.
Everything ahead of the B-pillar is common with the X6 F16; behind it the two go separate ways. The X5 M F85 stands wider again and carries aprons of its own.
