The F97 is the X3 M, built from 2019 on the G01 and the first X3 M of any kind. Under the bonnet sits the S58, the same twin-turbo straight-six as the M3 G80 and M4 G82, with 480 hp or 510 as a Competition.
The model codes are unusually treacherous here. The base car is a G01 and the M version an F97 — an F code on a G-generation car. Add three sisters differing only in the last digit: F95 is the X5 M, F96 the X6 M, F98 the X4 M.
In body terms the F97 brings flared wings front and rear, its own bumpers, a vented bonnet and its own sills. Doors, roof and tailgate come from the G01, and so do the headlights and rear lights — there is no such thing as an M headlight.
Which is exactly why switches, ignition barrels, headlights and grille surrounds are what can realistically be found for an X3 M, and those we have.
