On an open 8 Series a boot lid is a different component from the coupé's. The G14 has to stow a folded fabric roof behind the rear seats, and what is left is a shallow load aperture with a lid shaped to match. It carries its own hinges, its own seals and the bulkhead to the roof stowage — it has nothing in common with a G15 coupé's.
It is also why these parts reach the market at all: a rear-end shunt on a convertible hits the lid and the stowage cover first, while the expensive mechanism underneath often comes through untouched. Boot lids are what we hold for it, and for exactly that reason.
The 8 Series returned in 2018 after a twenty-year absence, this time as a grand tourer rather than a wedge. The G15 coupé, G14 convertible and G16 Gran Coupé share a nose — and separate completely from the B-pillar back.
