Two and a half tonnes, a V8 and an electric motor on top: the G90 is the first plug-in hybrid M5, and it reopened the argument about what an M car is allowed to weigh.
That has consequences for used electronics. On top of the usual control units sit high-voltage components, battery management and the drive-motor controller — parts that need not only coding but removal and fitting by someone with high-voltage certification. That is a legal requirement, not a formality.
The gearbox is the familiar eight-speed automatic, here with the electric motor built into it — mechanically the same base unit, electrically a different animal. A gearbox out of a G60 is therefore not a substitute, however familiar the casing looks. So far this model has given us control units and gearboxes.
