The F90 is the M5 of the G30 generation and marks the biggest break in the model's history: the first M5 with four-wheel drive. BMW took the heat out of it with a menu item that disengages the front axle and lets the car carry on driving its rear wheels alone.
The engine is the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 — 600 hp in base form, 625 as a Competition, 635 in the late CS. The roof came in steel with a sunroof and in carbon fibre without; both ran alongside each other and they do not interchange. On a panel off the shelf the difference is not always obvious at a glance.
In body terms the F90 is not an upgraded G30. The front wings are wider, the bonnet is vented, both bumpers and the sills are M parts, and the mirrors sit on two-piece stalks. Doors, roof and boot lid, though, come from the saloon, and the 2020 LCI with its new lamps and aprons applies to both.
So availability splits in two. Lamps, doors and aprons can be had through the G30 — and those are exactly what we keep for this car. The genuine M panels stay scarce.
