The Gran Coupé F36 is the most practical 4 Series and the least noticed: four doors, a low roofline — and a large tailgate instead of a boot lid. That makes it effectively a hatchback that looks like a saloon, and it swallows more than any other 4 Series in the range.
That tailgate is the most important difference when buying parts. It is large, heavy, carries the rear screen and has its own hinges, struts and, where specified, a powered mechanism. It has nothing in common with the F32's boot lid. What arrives here is mostly door cards and condensers.
At the front the F36 shares the entire nose and the front doors with the coupé. Rear doors, rear quarters, roofline and rear lights belong to it alone.
The LCI arrived in 2017 with new lamps. There was no M version of the Gran Coupé — the M Sport packages bring their own bumpers but not the flared wings of an F82.
